Conversation about sadness

From Early October

Sorry if this repeated posting of conversations with Maia is getting old, but it's a way for me to record them for posterity. As she gets older, I want to be able to look back and remember where she was at a particular moment. Right now, she's all about verbal development, organizing the world through language, and finding ways to articulate her feelings and thoughts about the world.

On the way to the grocery store today, I looked back in the car and Maia looked very sad.

Dad: Maia, why do you look so sad?
Maia: Because my face is sad.
Dad: Is that because you are sad?
Maia: Yeah. I am very, very sad.
Dad: Why are you so sad, Maia?
Maia: Because, actually, I don't really want to go to the grocery store.
Dad: Oh. I'm sorry to hear that. What can we do to make you feel happy?
Maia: Well, we could go back home
Dad: I'm sorry, Maia, we need to go to get groceries for the week.
Long pause...
Maia: I know what will make me feel happy.
Dad: What's that?
Maia: A wonderful nap.
Dad: Ok, we'll make sure to get home quicly so you can take a nap.
Maia: Yeah, that will make me happy.

Later, getting out of the car, she saw some pumpkins.
Maia: Giant pumpkins make me happy too.

Later, in the store, Maia had a huge smile on her face. I asked her "why?" . . .
Maia: I am thinking about a doo-licious nap in my warm bed.

Conversations with Maia never get old. And "dooo-licious nap" is now my go-to phrase.
