While playing with Maia and her dolls today, I noticed what I thought was a funky smell. I asked Maia "Did you drop a deuce"? She replied excitedly with "She DID!"
I thought this response was funny because up until now, she always answers that question with "Yup". Now, she was responding with a more complex answer (this is how we respond when we find a poo in her diaper) even though she mixed her pronouns up a bit. I walked upstairs to change her diaper. When I noticed the diaper was only wet, I said "No, there are no poopers"! She replied with "Nope. Only Peepers".
I could't hold back my laughter. This conversation was just too much fun. On the way down the stairs, I said "Maia, you told me that you made a poop but there were no poopers". She responded "BABIES drop a deuce in the diaper".
Now I get it. We were playing with her dolls when she answered that question the first time. She was trying to tell me that the toy babies dropped a deuce... not her. When she responded with "She DID!", she didn't screw up the pronouns as I had first thoughl... she used them correctly! She was being perfectly clear and it was I who misunderstood.
This phase is way too much fun. Her language skills are exploding, and so is her imagination.

I cannot tell you how happy it makes me that she is still saying "drop a deuce."
I told my friend Dan, whose son is just about Maia's age, about "drop a deuce" and he could not stop laughing.
