Winter days

Maia just went down for her nap--although I can still hear her talking quietly to herself upstairs--after a morning out and about in this frigid weather. I thought about staying in the house this morning, but we were both feeling bored and stir-crazy, so we went to Zingerman's for coffee (mine) and vanilla milk (Maia's). She loves to order for herself at Zingerman's, and we're there frequently enough that several of the coffee shop employees know her order beforehand. But, of course, she still insists on telling them what she wants anyway. We then met Brian for lunch, and we just returned home a few minutes ago.

Maia's currently very into music, particularly music that she determines to be "hers." We have a few albums of kids' music that are not in the "unbearably saccharine" category, so they're not unpleasant for us adults to listen to. Thank goodness! We've made great strides in weaning Maia off her pacifier when she takes trips in the car, but only with the assistance of her music collections. It seems that listening to her CDs is a good substitute for the paci. :) Her favorite song is "The Rainbow Connection" in all its forms: recorded by Sarah McLachlan, Jason Mraz, Kermit the Frog . . . but NOT the Willie Nelson version. She'll ask for the song by name over and over again--with the phrase "How about 'The Rainbow Connection'?"--and will often sing along when it comes to a verse that she knows.

At the coffee shop today, we spoke briefly with someone who has a three-year-old grandchild who thought that Maia was also three. I guess the combination of tall + very verbal is making Maia seem very old and wise for her years. :)

Yeah, I am also tall and very verbal. Funny, how it's no longer so flattering when people think I'm older than my years.
